Wompatuck State Park

Wompatuck State Park Professional Review and Guide

"This ride was developed on the route of a race that took place in the park during the summer of 1996. The race has since moved on, giving this trail a chance to recover. You should expect numerous puddles and an abundance of protruding rocks and roots. These features and the variety of terrain will challenge most abilities.

In some areas you'll slog through loose sand, but the trail can change quickly to rocky drop-offs that will pinch flat most tires in the blink of an eye. In addition, suspension is nice to have while cruising over the roots and rocks, but it can become cumbersome when trying to wind your way up the hills and between the countless wind-downed trees. Terrain: Paved fire roads, doubletrack, and singletrack-abundant roots and loose rocks, some soft base, and moderate amount of packed dirt."

Nice mix of trails from beginner to technical with rocks, roots, deadfalls and all the trimmings! Just watch out for the deer, sometimes they dont hear you coming...
I rode here with a few friends and had a blast. We rode for 2.5 hours and was totally spent afterwards. There are some really technical areas and some fast downs and killer climbs.
This is a fun place to ride. I got confused at the turn "at four small pine trees and a tree with a white dot" turn left. Come to find out, all the trails are now marked and the trail map available at the visitors center is a full color work of art. Its a topo map as well so you can choose to work the hills or work around them. The trail junction markers are positioned so that when you are facing them you are facing north. (get the new trail map before the ride) The park was very clean, the people friendly and the fall colors are great. Note: this trail is set in the southern area of the park where hunting is allowed. Bicyclists are warned to be aware of hunting season and "wear blaze orange when appropriate." There is no hunting on Sundays. The rest of this park begs to be explored.
I don't think people in the area around Wompatuck realize what a gem they have. The place is huge with hours of fun riding different types of terrain. Pick up a map at the office a take off for a half day of great riding. THis park has trails for everyone. All you need to do is get out there and look. I was there in April so it was still a little chilly but you work up a sweat pretty quick. All around a great place to ride.
