Pottapaug Pond and Quabbin Reservoir, North End

Pottapaug Pond and Quabbin Reservoir, North End Professional Review and Guide

"Nestled among the hillsides of central Massachusetts,Pottapoag Pond presents a rare opportunity to paddle in stunning, pristine surroundings. Here and on the North End, hand-paddled craft have their only access to the wild hinterlands of the Quabbin Reservoir complex, the water supply for 40 percent of Massachusetts. Shallow protected coves provide hours of paddling among carpets of ferns under towering, lichen-covered pines. Beaver have removed almost all deciduous trees along the shoreline, and we could see their new work farther up the hillsides. We prefer to paddle here midweek when fishing activity is low. Expect to spend an entire day if you intend to explore the entire shoreline and all of the coves. Expect to see: bald eagle, towering pines, gorgeous scenery."

We attempted this trip but were informed by the park ranger that no boats are allowed on Quabbin that have not been powerwashed and tagged specifically for Quabbin. This is a zebra mussel control effort.

I have not personally paddled this area but have stopped to ask about fees and parking. I was informed that because the Quabbin Reservoir and Pottagaug Pond are for fishing, you must have a fishing license to paddle there or purchase a "one day license" from them for $5 whether you intend to fish or not. Also cost $4 a car to park and $2 per person to launch boat. Even for canoes and kayaks. Just wanted to share......
