Housatonic River Brookside Road to Old Covered Bridge

Housatonic River: Brookside Road to Old Covered Bridge Professional Review and Guide

"The Nature Conservancy calls the southern Berkshires home to “one of the most globally significant ecosystems in New England.” The combination of calcareous bedrock, alkaline soils, pure water, and large tracts of minimally disturbed land have allowed the genesis and survival of a mosaic of unique ecosystems. Through it all flows the Housatonic River. From the access area on Brookside Road in Great Barrington to Bartholomew’s Cobble just south of the Rannapo Road access in Ashley Falls, the river takes you through some of the rarest environments in the Northeast.

Most of the journey is through wide farm fields and lowland floodplain forest. Wildlife abounds and, though roads and people are always fairly close by, the sounds of civilization rarely reach over the riverbank. On this river section there is an added bonus—you can touch a bit of history while enjoying the nostalgic smells and ambience of one of the nicest covered bridges in New England."
