Deerfield River - Fife Brook Section Fife Brook Dam to Zoar Gap

Deerfield River - Fife Brook Section: Fife Brook Dam to Zoar Gap Professional Review and Guide

"From Fife Brook Dam in Florida, Massachusetts, to the Number 4 dam in Buckland, the Deerfield River flows unimpeded for 17.0 miles. The longest stretch without a dam on the main river, this run is also among the most heavily used by whitewater paddlers.

From a boating perspective, the most prominent feature here is Zoar Gap, a class III rapid 5.0 miles downstream from the dam. But there is much more of interest than whitewater alone. The history of this stretch is closely linked to the development of the railroad and hydropower. Environmentally, this section is important for the variety of bird species present, including red-tailed hawks, ospreys, bald eagles, and blue herons; its active beavers; and its potential as a trout fishery."
