Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve

Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Remote, uncrowded, quiet—words not often associated with Cape Cod, especially during the crazy summer season. Washburn Island may change the way you look at the Cape. It certainly did for me. The island is right at the mouth of the Childs River. When you paddle or motor out there, you’re never too far from shore. Plus, these are protected waters that rarely get too rough, so it would be a relatively easy trip if you plan to arrive by canoe or kayak, making this is a perfect spot for your first island camping experience.

Long, sweeping, flat, and sandy, the beach opens to a shallow bay with gentle waves. This would be a very safe place for kids to spend the day in and out of the water, which tends to be a bit warmer here as it’s so shallow."
