Ashumet Holly Wildlife Sanctuary Mass Audubon - Grassy Pond Trail

Ashumet Holly Wildlife Sanctuary (Mass Audubon) - Grassy Pond Trail Professional Review and Guide

"This easy jaunt around Grassy Pond has something for everyone. Plant enthusiasts will enjoy the fine collection of native and nonnative trees and shrubs, the variety of forest, meadow, and wetland wildflowers, some quite rare, and, of course, the magnificent holly trees, which give this Massachusetts Audubon Society sanctuary its name.

Birders will enjoy watching the aerial antics of a barn swallow colony housed in an old barn near the trailhead. The gentle nature of the well-maintained trails, termed “accessible by wheelchair” in a sanctuary pamphlet, will appeal to families with children. Some of the trail junctions have numbered markers, and all trails are well signed."

"In an effort to protect Cape Cod’s native American holly trees, horticulturist Wilfrid Wheeler began this plantation in 1925. When Massachusetts Audubon acquired the property in 1965, there were more than 1,000 holly trees on the property, many of them planted by Wheeler.

The trees included at least sixty-five varieties transplanted from all over the northeastern United States. Besides the hollies there were other unusual trees such as a stand of shrublike Franklinia trees which flower in the fall. This is a small reservation, but the presence of so many holly trees makes it worth the trip. The property is comprised of mixed woodlands and fields that surround a small pond. Highlights: Pond, fields, good birding."
