The combination of a new Land Bank property with an ancient way allows for an exploration of the interior of the more-developed eastern end of the island. Pennywise Preserve is a 118-acre woodland that connects to the historic Dr. Fisher road. The entire length of the “ancient way” was constructed in the mid-1800s by Dr. Daniel Fisher, a wealthy edgartown resident, to carry grain from his gristmill in West Tisbury to his home in edgartown. The return route is especially scenic as it passes through a low sandy area created by glacial melting and travels along a newly cut path around the private Vineyard Golf Course.
