Long River Trail

Long River Trail Professional Review and Guide

"Heavily wooded and hilly trails provide a great workout, complete with breathtaking views of the Mashpee River. This is one of the longer hikes in the book; take your time while sea birds pass overhead as you wind your way down the river."

This is a delightful trail, reasonably well maintained, and takes about two hours to complete. The guide by Cheryl Huban and Falcon Press is mediocre and makes one big error. "At 0.6 mile, take the left (south) fork". Actually, the left fork takes you due east to a dead end at housing. The guide should have said the RIGHT fork! It's marked with a post emblazoned with "LR". Also a number of landmarks, such as the sign for Marsters Grove, are no longer present, but if you keep the river on your right and mostly in view, you'll be OK.
This is a nice quiet light hike/walking trail. There are a lot of side trails to go down next to the river bed; and there are plenty of strategically placed "benches." The trail is not wide and at some parts it is overgrown (ticks are very prominent, long clothing is a must) so it isn't a group type of walk. It would be excellent for trail running; especially if you like to test reaction time (plenty of roots and forks). During the time I went, I ran into two people. Being one of the few trails on the Cape, I will assume it is quiet all the time. Clear of garbage and debriss, and little damage off the path's.
