This quiet tidal river extending from Nantucket Sound to Swan Pond near the Dennis-Harwich border offers a delightful introduction to the natural attractions of the mid-Cape. Situated between the larger Bass River to the west, the largest mid-Cape waterway, and Harwich’s Herring River to the east, less developed and more popular with birders and other nature lovers, this modest waterway welcomes beginner and experienced paddlers alike. The Swan Pond River also passes through some of the most striking conservation land in the mid-Cape region. Look for gulls, cormorants, and geese, but also more eye-appealing species including osprey, great blue herons, merganser ducks, and hovering high overhead, osprey.
