Farmington River: Otis Bridge (MA) to Tariffville Gorge (CT) Professional Review and Guide

"This eTrail includes two sections of Massachusetts' Farmington River (Otis Bridge to Route 8 and Route 8 to New Boston) and Connecticut's Tariffville Gorge section from Route 189 to Route 187. Compared to portions farther downstream, this section of the Farmington is small and fairly slow moving at low levels, with few rocks and often a couple of strainers.

Run either as a separate trip or as a warm-up for the more exciting section below, it offers only a minimal challenge to the competent boater, but it is good water for the novice. The Farmington River above New Boston is a fine class III–IV run, provided there is enough water. The minimum level is critical. This section of 1.5 miles is easy to do several times in one day, and it presents several opportunities for playing in the rapids. In low water it is a good place to train beginners. A slalom has been held here in the spring. Low water levels show the most rocks, whereas medium levels generally have haystacks and a fast current."
