My favorite time to hike through Middle road Sanctuary is mid-summer, when blueberries and huckleberries are at their peak. Oak trees provide shade as i nibble succulent berries and climb the trail that overlooks the south coast and Chilmark Pond. I compete for berries with a wide variety of birds that inhabit the sanctuary, including great-crested flycatchers, downy and hairy woodpeckers, red-tailed hawks, white breasted nuthatches, rufous-sided towhees, Carolina wrens, and chickadees.
