Fulling Mill Brook Preserve Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Sound effects accompany you on this hike to one of my favorite picnic spots on Martha’s Vineyard. The brook that runs through this property provides an ideal environment for vegetation that prefers lots of moisture. The boulder- lined bank of Fulling Mill Brook is a good place to eat your lunch. The post-lunch return rambles across meadows and through woodlands.

From the parking lot, walk behind the trail board onto the Green Trail where you will navigate your first brook crossing (easy, up the stairs and over the walkway). The boardwalk leads to a bridge where a bench awaits if you feel the need for a rest stop. The trail ascends before it meets a dirt road."

Detailed Trail Descriptions from Our Guidebooks

"Five distinct plant communities are found on this 50-acre preserve: mesic (moist) hardwood forest, successional shrubland, red-maple swamp, mixedoak woodland, and herbaceous grassland. Sample them all on this sometimes-hilly excursion, which traces the length of Fulling Mill Brook between Middle and South roads. The term fulling refers to a process whereby fabric is cleaned and preshrunk before being made into clothing. This process was carried out by early settlers in a waterpowered mill; the source of water was called a fulling-mill brook." Read more

This is a very enjoyable hike - varied terrain, varied scenary within a relatively short and not too strenuous hike. We highly recomened this trail as one of the most interesting and varied available on Martha's Vineyard. It is very well maintained and the notes are very accurate.
