Boston Charlestown

Boston Charlestown Professional Review and Guide

"Charlestown is Boston’s oldest neighborhood—and over the years has been arguably its most volatile. This single square mile of turf bred and witnessed conflicts almost from the arrival of European settlers. For centuries the town trained and outfitted the nation’s military forces; it has seen ethnic, racial, and labor tensions simmer and erupt into violence; it has hosted one of history’s most infamous executions. And that’s not even to mention Charlestown’s two high points (literally!): Bunker Hill (where the first battle of the American Revolution was supposed to take place) and Breed’s Hill (where it did).

Its residents are amazingly diverse—descendants of Yankee, Irish, Italian, Portuguese, and French Canadian immigrants along with more recent Asian, African American, and Latin American immigrants and young urban professionals. And consider concluding your stroll with a stop at any of the town’s myriad excellent restaurants. There’s even a colonial-era tavern with Irish beer on tap, where Paul Revere was once a regular customer."
