Mohawk Trail State Forest

Mohawk Trail State Forest Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"A sense of reverence overcomes you upon entering Mohawk Trail State Forest. The woods here have a cathedralesque quality. Take a moment as you drive in to get out of your vehicle. Gaze at the tall, nicely spaced spruce–pine forest forming a canopy over you, and relish the “wise silence of the forest” (to quote Ralph Waldo Emerson) and the delightful scent of conifer.

This is an older-growth forest, as the trees are all at least 100 feet tall, with some considerably taller than that. At the forest floor, the tree trunks are quite massive; there isn’t much in the way of an understory, so the forest has an open feel to it. The sunlight filters down through the giant conifers in broken shafts, and most breezes are captured by the long arms of the trees. Parts of the forest are also interspersed with maple, birch, and other hardy deciduous trees and the offspring of the giant evergreens."
