Great Brook Farm State Park Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"This hike provides a full tour of the nearly 1,000-acre Great Brook Farm State Park, passing over terrain that varies from rugged, rocky slopes to boardwalks stretched across swampland.

"Circle the very pond beside which Henry David Thoreau resided for two years in the 1840s, writing his timeless treatises on nature’s value to mankind. The busy, popular destination offers trails aplenty. Our hike circles Walden Pond, stopping by the site of Thoreau’s Cabin. Leave Walden Pond for Heywood Meadow, a marsh, and then climb to Emersons Cliff, named for Thoreau’s friend Ralph Waldo Emerson. From there you complete the circuit around Walden Pond, passing the main beach area." Read more

This is an afternoon trail. For 2 hours of light to moderate Mountain biking. The trail is 8 miles long but loops a lot, so to bike the 8 miles you have to go back to where you started 3-4 times at least. The longest and nicest part of the trail goes south toward the Hearbreak Hill, even this one is only moderate in intensity. Compared to Lynn Reserve Forest, this trail is much easier, closest to Boston downtown and ideal for an afternoon escapade. If you have kids, that's the place to go. The farm have a lot of animals and it's fun. The icecream stand is nice and the cow watching is entertaining. They milk the cows at 6h30pm.
