Blue Hills Reservation Ponkapoag Pond

Blue Hills Reservation: Ponkapoag Pond Professional Review and Guide

"Another hike within the vast Blue Hills Reservation land, this is a route of interesting extremes. On one end of Ponkapoag Pond is an Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) encampment, while on the opposite end, the trail passes through a verdant golf course. Within minutes you can be deep in the pine forest losing your thoughts in nature, or just as quickly be skirting patches of heavy residential presence through the trees.

Begin from the parking area off Randolph Street, which is really a series of alcoves on a potholed gravel access road surrounded by wooden guardrails. Walk eastward down a hill on this road, and you’ll begin to catch glimpses of the pond through the trees. Once on the Ponkapoag Trail, you’ll pass through low-lying swampy woods on either side. Even though you’re on a well-graded sand and gravel access road, the surface can get muddy during spring or after significant precipitation."
