West Cambridge, outside Boston

West Cambridge, outside Boston Professional Review and Guide

"The pathways of Cambridge spread far beyond its famous education centers. Some areas, such as the Charles River, are well known to present and former students. Still, the secrets of the leafy residential areas west of Harvard Square are likely to remain unseen until teased out by a journey on foot with an advisory text in hand.

Cambridge was founded in 1630 by English colonists seeking opportunity and religious freedom. Much of the street pattern dates from colonial times, though of course the river has now been tamed and is no longer tidal. It is a popular spot for recreational boating—principally rowing and sailing. The Metropolitan District Commission has the dual role of maintaining the parks and of moving the traffic along the roadway edging the park. In this competition, the parkland is somewhat squeezed. As a whole West Cambridge presents many contrasts of natural beauty and architectural landmarks."
