Overlooking Boston Harbor, Deer Island has been home to an Indian incarceration center, a defensive fort, an immigration quarantine area, a county prison, a hospital, a lighthouse, and a pump house now on the National Register of Historic Places and today home to a contemporary sewage treatment plant that was a major force behind the amazing cleanup of Boston Harbor. Add trails with nearly continual panoramas of the dramatic coastline and you have a scenic and historic hike. After looping around most of the lake, take a spur to Emersons Cliff, passing Heywood Meadow, a glacially created wetland. Descend back to Walden Pond and complete your loop around this place that inspired a man who inspired millions.
