Downtown and Back Bay, Boston Marathon

Downtown and Back Bay, Boston Marathon Professional Review and Guide

"This walk takes you to the several historic finish lines of the Boston Marathon and by marathon memorabilia and monuments through the lovely streets of Back Bay.

Start at Eliot Hotel on Massachusetts and Commonwealth. The former bartender at the hotel’s lounge induced every marathon winner for years to put his footprints into concrete in the sidewalk in front of the hotel and identified each with a brass marker. The Eliot Lounge, its bartender, and the brass markers are all gone, but you can still see the footprints in the cement. Clio in the hotel is a great, but expensive, dining spot. Visible farther left on the horizon down Commonwealth is the Citgo sign mounted atop a building. Known to runners as “1 mile to go,” it is approximately 1 mile from the finish line. At its base is Fenway Park. Each marathon, Red Sox fans leaving an afternoon exhibition game cheer the passing runners."

Being a big distance runner, it was an absolute must for me to see the finish areas of the past Boston Marathons! Visualizing where Bill Rodgers, Robert Cheruiyot, and Cosmas Ndeti have made history are definitely enough to help motivate me to hit the road for some more training! If you are at all into running, you must visit this location when in the Boston area!
