Gates Pond

Gates Pond Professional Review and Guide

"Finding a lake left in its natural state is rare indeed here in eastern Massachusetts. Here’s a pond that doesn’t have a single cottage on its shoreline, and the trail that circles it is open for all to enjoy. Gates Pond is a reservoir, managed by the Hudson Department of Public Works, and the only activities allowed are hiking and cross-country skiing. (Hudson and Berlin residents may apply for special fishing permits.)

Located just off Route 495 in Berlin, Gates Pond is easily accessible yet remains something of a secret. I’ve often hiked around the pond in the evening on my way home from business meetings in New Hampshire. The walk around the pond takes about forty-five minutes to an hour—just enough time to help you unwind after a busy day. Highlights: Circular loop walk around pond."

This is a pretty hike around a pond that is fairly easy. One thing I don't like about the hike is the amount of loose dogs. I love dogs but letting them run off leash is upsetting for people scared of dogs and also for the wildlife. If you love dogs and don't mind a ton of them running around you'll enjoy this lovely walk but if you prefer a quiet hike without all the dog traffic you may want to look somewhere else.
