Mount Greylock

Mount Greylock Professional Review and Guide

"Mount Greylock is a fascinating place to explore—from endangered plants and animals to travels with Thoreau. This highest peak in Massachusetts has something memorable for everyone. Mount Greylock ahs drawn and inspired some very interesting people to its heights. The list includes Nathaniel Hawthorne, Edith Wharton, Oliver Wendell Holmes, William Cullen Bryant, and Henry David Thoreau.

Herman Melville even dedicated one of his novels to “the majestic mountain, Greylock.” Tens of thousands of visitors drive up the two auto roads each year to marvel at the vertigo view of Adams far below. They immerse themselves in the splendid sights of the summit, including the graceful stone summit tower. In recent years the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Management has made significant improvements to the summit area that enhance the enjoyment of this special place."

The roads to the summit are closed until 2009 which make it a great time to hike!!! Besides the visitors station, there are NUMEROUS ways to reach trailheads on this reservation. Several trails straight to the summit begin in Greylock Glen in Adams. The trailhead on Roaring Brook Road off rte. 7 in Williamstown will bring you to Stoney Ledge (one of the best views the mountain offers) and from there you can continue to the summit. We hike on this mountain weekly. Trails are available for all degrees of ability, there are many waterfalls and views. Take advantage of the alone time you can have at the summit of this mountain while the roads are closed! Also, each Columbus day, there is a Greylock "Ramble" where many, many people hike to the the top any which way they can- a favorite but very hard climb is to follow up the power lines which run staight up the mountain near the thunderbolt trail. Be prepared to climb some rocks or go around! There is so much to see on Mt Greylock, don't miss it- ask locals about there favorite hikes!

I did not rate this trail because we were unable to hike it. The road to the summit is closed until March of 2009. You may hike from the visitors station only.

Great mountain to visit. The lodge at the top has details on dozens of trails, with something suited for just about everyone, though even the fairly easy trails tend to be steep.
