Ames Nowell State Park

Ames Nowell State Park Professional Review and Guide

"This 5-mile loop links a host of single-track trails and two power-line trails in this sunny, wooded park. The riding conditions vary widely, from fairly easy to somewhat difficult.

You begin by paralleling a large pond—but avoid the trail skirting the shoreline. After cruising on a paved rural road for a half mile, the ride explores a power-line trail lined with light vegetation for a short distance, before picking up a network of single-track trails."

"while the existing trails around the pond are mainly hiking trails that dead end at the side of the pond, a continuous loop of the park can be made by linking power line tracks, a few hiking trails, doubletrack access roads, and bordering paved roads. This ride takes a full circle and provides a number of views of the pond from a variety of angles.

About 60 percent of the ride has a view of the pond. Terrain: Smooth singletrack interspersed with some rocks and roots. Most of the technical riding takes place over sections that have multiple roots, but there are only a few of these sections."

The entrance to this trail is great. The view from the edge of the dam is excellent as the pond seems to vanish in the distance. The boardwalk ride was fun but could be punishing if you ride off the edge. All bets are off once you get to the power lines. Deep sand with many ATV ruts. There are so many side trails its difficult to know if you are going in the right direction. The "trail" becomes very difficult going with large and loose rocks, logs stumps and such. Several deep muddy spots. Come with enough time to get lost and find your way back.
