Eastern New Orleans Professional Review and Guide
"This may be the closest day trip you can take from the Big Easy. While technically within the city limits, eastern New Orleans—or New Orleans East as it’s commonly called—is only about fifteen minutes from downtown heading east on I–10. Geographically distinct from the rest of the city, eastern New Orleans lies just over the Industrial Canal, in the heart of swamps and marshes. The area was developed beginning in the 1970s and grew into a bedroom community that today is enjoying an economic resurgence.
Despite its proximity to downtown, eastern New Orleans is unique; nowhere else in the city can visitors find an amusement park, nature center, wildlife refuge, and early-morning Vietnamese farmers’ market—all within a five-minute drive. This day trip is especially good for those traveling with children whose idea of a good time includes the thrill-and-chill rides of a theme park as well as exploring swamp trails. This eTrail from the DayTrips series describes many fascinating, exciting, (and many free of charge) things to do, most within a two-hour drive of New Orleans. Each Day Trip includes, destination highlights, places to visit along the way, choice restaurants and lodging, and shopping."
