While you can walk the French Quarter on your own, considering joining in one of the organized walking tours in the area so you can get some exercise while also learning the history of the area. Then, time permitting, go back on your own and walk the route in the guide at a more leisurely pace. I have been visiting New Orleans off and on since I was a kid. (I grew up just a few hours away, my husband is from there, and I visit the city for work frequently now.) I recently decided to sign up for a Crime Tour in the French quarter one evening while in town for a business trip, and I loved it, even though I was already familiar with the area. I had walked the route many times on my own before, but never knew the history behind the buildings. I hope to do one of the Ghost Tours the next time I am in town.
