Blue Heron

Blue Heron Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"On this hike you walk along the rim of the Big South Fork gorge and visit a re-created coal-mining camp.

Because the tour of Blue Heron is self-guided, how much time you spend there is entirely up to you. Distance-wise, the Blue Heron visit is only a small fraction of the total hike. Most of the walking is in the woods and along the river bottom. The loop starts on the rim of the Big South Fork gorge above Blue Heron and descends to the town; from there you follow the river past a narrow, rocky stretch called Devils Jump before climbing back up the ridge."

Excellent trail. Well marked. Very scenic, with two overlooks of the BSF River that are incredible. Walk through Cracks in the Rock is something. Lots of cliffs, rock shelters. One of the best day hikes in the area.
