Fishtrap Lake State Park

Fishtrap Lake State Park Professional Review and Guide

"The park’s main campground is the Grapevine camping area, which offers both standard electric and tent sites, a playground, wireless connectivity, and a place to launch your boat to fish for bass, bluegill, and catfish. This is the shelter area of the park. The area has a lot of local history behind it. It was the location of the Hatfield-McCoy feud, in which Pike County— and what is now Mingo County, West Virginia—played major geographic roles in local development. Additionally, archaeological investigations in the Fishtrap Lake area resulted in the recording of thirty-three prehistoric Native American sites, including one rock shelter, eight late prehistoric village sites, and twenty-four open campsites.

Excavations at the Sloane Site at Woodside recovered 65,000 artifacts, now stored at the University of Kentucky. The campground has water and electric in many of the campsites. And while there are no sewer hookups, there is a nearby dumping station and laundry service. Pets are allowed, and there is a playground for the kids. The electric is a 30 amp service, and wireless Internet is available. Boat launching is available nearby; the lake has a good population of bass, bluegill, and catfish."
