Daniel Boone National Forest, Salt Lick— Zilpo Recreation Area

Daniel Boone National Forest, Salt Lick— Zilpo Recreation Area Professional Review and Guide

"Known by locals as Zilpo Flats, this campground offers the best of both worlds: While it has some electric sites, most are primitive. It’s easy to get to; however, this campground is somewhat isolated from the rest of the busy area around Cave Run Lake. Much of the lake around the campground is shallow, supporting large aquatic weed beds. Some of the largest muskies in the lake have been caught along the shoreline of Zilpo Flats. You can walk to the lake or swim at the beach. Horse trails and hiking trails lead off in many directions.

Birding is also popular; bald eagles nest nearby every year and are often spotted soaring along the wooded shoreline as they hunt and rear their young. This campground is also continually upgrading. There are showers and flush toilets scattered over the 335 acres. Drinking water is also located at different areas of the campground. This area draws many campers back year after year."
