Hensley Settlement

Hensley Settlement Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"An abandoned Appalachian settlement on the top of Brush Mountain is the destination for this steep climb up a narrow gravel road that follows Shillalah Creek partway and passes several attractive limestone formations.

Explore the settlement and the rough wooden houses and farm structures that were once home for a hardy bunch of mountain people. In addition to offering an education about a life long past, the settlement is a lovely spot, covered with farm fields and rustic fencing. The grounds and buildings are part of the Cumberland Gap National Historical Park and are well maintained for visitors."

The route described in this trail description is no longer open for hikers. The shortest hike to the Hensley Settlement is now via the 5-mile Shillalah Creek Trail, which is a gated dirt road that the National Park Service uses for vehicle access to the settlement. Thus, a hike to the Hensley Settlement including exploration of the entire settlement would be in the 12-mile range for the round-trip hike.
