Mantle Rock

Mantle Rock Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"A large natural arch and a beautiful stream-crossed bottomland make this little hike a real gem. You also learn about an unfortunate chapter of American history, the Trail of Tears, and follow a portion of the original route the Cherokee took between 1838 and 1839.

This hike takes you to Mantle Rock, a large sandstone arch located in a beautiful stream-crossed bottomland. The walk offers scenic rewards to justify the drive to reach this corner of Kentucky. Measuring 188 feet in length and 30 feet in height, Mantle Rock is one of the longest arches in the state. It is also part of one of the ugliest chapters in American history: President Andrew Jackson’s expulsion of the Cherokee Indians from the eastern United States."

Took the whole family on this trip. It was a lot of fun. The arch was incredible and it was spring, so the creek flowed right beside it. Unfortunately, the ice storm from this past winter seems to have demolished the trail past the arch, so that was as far as we got.

Very enjoybale hike. The streams where all dry due to lack of rain in the area for quite a while. Mantle Rock is at the beginning of the hike so I would think you lose most visitors at that point. There was one group of 3 people when we started the hike but they did not continue past Mantle Rock and we where the only ones on the trail. We saw some wildlife in the back of the loop where it is obvious that not many people travel.

Not a hard trail, very nice. A good place at the end for lunch. Very good for pictures. Might be somewhat muddy after a good hard rain.
