Jesse Stuart State Nature Preserve Trail

Jesse Stuart State Nature Preserve Trail Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"A lovely, tree-lined ridgetop and an old barn and cabin in a wild flower-laden meadow are the highlights of this loop hike in rural northeastern Kentucky. This 733-acre state nature preserve in W-Hollow was once the home of Jesse Stuart
(1906–1984), a prolific novelist, poet, and short-story writer whose works focused on eastern Kentucky hill life.

W-Hollow figured prominently in both his fiction and real life. If you want to get a feel for Stuart’s writings, try Head o’ W-Hollow, a collection of short stories, or The Thread That Runs So True, about his experience as a teacher."

Pretty muddy in spots due to the last several days of heavy rain, including this morning. Most of the trail is well marked and even follows a pipeline along the ridge top for a bit. I did lose the trail markers about 2/3rds along the Seaton Ridge loop and ended up turning around. Next time I’ll start the other direction and see if I can find the connection from the opposite direction. A great hidden gem I didn’t know about just a few miles from my home.

The property is nice for a relaxing stroll or trail run. The problem is that some of the trail is nice, wide, and taken care of and other parts seem to fade away into thick jungle. At one point on the trail it crosses a pipline and the signs seem to fade away. Bottom line...........bring a pair of loppers, this place needs some work. The best part about this place is that few people visit.
