Breaks I-Park

Breaks I-Park Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Breathtaking views into the 1,000-foot-deep gorge known as the Breaks is the key reward of this hike. You also walk along the fast-moving stream that made the gorge eons ago.

The park is in both states, but the developed portion is in Virginia. Take the main park road (VA 702, also called Commission Circle) past the park restaurant, lodge, and conference buildings and turn left into the Towers Tunnel Overlook parking area 1 mile from VA 80. The trailhead is at the far end of the lot, away from the road."

Trails in the Breaks range from easy strolls in the woods to moderately technical day hikes. Trails are well marked and maps are available at the visitors center. If you wish to camp, use the campground and use that as a base for a couple of days of hiking. Be sure to try the Prospectors trail with a side hike to the bottom of the gorge. In October the river is running and you can watch some excellent kyacking.
