Rockcastle Valley End-to-End Professional Guide
Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook
"On this backpack, the Sheltowee Trace traverses the eastern side of the Rockcastle River Valley. First, dip into the rugged Cane Creek watershed, where rockhouses, waterfalls, and sandstone bluffs enhance this appealing stream. After an easy first day, leave Cane Creek and keep north, passing Van Hook Falls before doing a little ridge walking when the Trace passes along a high ridge from which hikers can peer out on the Daniel Boone National Forest and beyond. Next, drop down into Big Dog Branch, where the Trace twists and curves, up and down, between streams and hilltops.
Hikers must pay close attention, as the trail makes sudden turns and doesnt always go where you expect. A hemlock flat awaits campers here. Your final day is the longest, but your pack is lightest. A highlight of this section is the swinging bridge over Sinking Creek. Bypass an outpost of civilization at Pine Creek Church before dropping to Pine Creek, an ultraclear and attractive watercourse. The trips end, KY 1956, is just north of KY 80. Outstanding Features: Van Hook Falls, Big Dog Branch Falls, and views"
