North/South Trail

North/South Trail Professional Review and Guide

"This long-distance hike in Land Between The Lakes takes you into isolated coves along Kentucky Lake and up to quiet ridgetops above the water.

The North/South Trail runs the length of Land Between The Lakes (LBL)—from the South Welcome Station in Tennessee to the North Welcome Station in Kentucky. This hike follows the trail’s northern half, starting at Golden Pond Visitor Center about 10 miles north of the Tennessee line. According to LBL, the entire trail is 58.6 miles long, and this northern part totals 31.2 miles.

The trail is a lovely backpacking route along Kentucky Lake, with a good mix of shoreline stretches and ridgetop bluffs. There’s also a good deal of bottomland walking along small streams that feed into the lake. Seven springs line this route, along with shelters for overnight camping."

Our scout group backpacked the North-South Trail taking 3 and 1/2 days to complete it. Overall, a beautiful trip only marred by the trash that has washed up in areas when the lake is high. There are certain intersections on the trail that should be marked more clearly. The elevation gain I would call more than "minimal," but is not extreme. We parked a trailer full of bikes at the North Visitor Center and on completion of the backpack rode bikes 19 miles down The Trace to Golden Pond Visitor Center. This worked well logistically and earned us the BSA 50-miler award.
