Vernon-Douglas State Nature Preserve Professional Review and Guide
"Vernon-Douglas Nature Preserve, just south of the ever-popular Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest (see Hikes 14 and 15), rarely sees a hiker. Donated to the Audubon Society of Kentucky in 1972 and now managed by the Kentucky State Nature Preserves Commission, this 730-acre tract protects a large second-growth forest in the Knobs region of central Kentucky. Th e trail traverses low-lying creeks and dry rocky ridges, supporting a wide variety of fl ora and fauna. Pileated woodpeckers and hooting owls drown out the occasional road noise from the Martha Layne Collins Blue Grass Parkway."
