Detailed Trail Descriptions from Our Guidebooks

"Sheltering below the jagged crest of the Palisades, the Sierra’s largest collection of glaciers provide a magnificent alpine backdrop to this rugged Eastern Sierra canyon. The South Fork canyon makes a handsome transition between the deserts of the high Great Basin and the jagged alpine teeth of the Palisade Crest. Pungent sagebrush carpets the ground, spiked with pines, mountain mahoganies, and even some daring little beavertail cacti, while cottonwoods and aspens hug Big Pine Creek, all within ready sight of the Palisade glaciers. In August, blue elderberry trees dangle bunches of seedy, tart fruit, but red Sierra gooseberries make far sweeter trailside snacks."
