Backpacking California: Mountain, Foothill, Coastal, & Desert Adventures in the Golden State
by Author varies by trail (Wilderness Press)
The first miles of this walk are reminiscent of a desert canyon, a miniature of Death Valley’s Titus Canyon, yet it is just a 20- minute drive from the town of Bishop and accessible by two-wheel-drive vehicle. The walk up a little-used dirt road leads you through a steep narrow canyon of dark metamorphic rock, past sections of exquisitely folded layers, through a band of limestone eroded into pinnacles, and up into rolling flats of western junipers and pinyon pines. Two perennial springs provide water.
