Spring Mill State Park Village Trail

Spring Mill State Park: Village Trail Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"A trail to a cave canyon, through a pioneer village, and to a pioneer cemetery. Many hikers go no farther than Totem Rock before backtracking. Few hike the entire trail. The outbound leg of the trail along the western side of the peninsula presents the most rugged aspects of the hike—a continuous series of gullies and rolling ridges decorated by sandstone outcroppings.

The first evidence of the sandstone formations comes just past the 0.1-mile mark, when the Main Trail crosses the Wildlife Management Demonstration Trail. Turn right and take a short climb down to a rocky bluff that offers a prelude of the sandstone formations that lie ahead."

Beautiful Southern Indiana Scenery - heavily wooded, rolling hills, and well-marked trail. Totem Rock is spectacular and reminiscent of Hocking Hills in Ohio. Ranger warned us of heavy tick population and provided us with tick repellent. Paved bike trail also looked nice but we found no bike rentals in the area.

I hiked this trail on Labor Day 2006. It was my first hike since May. I don't hike in the summer. The 6.5 miles was just right. The terrain varied from rocky ravines to quiet stands of pines. The trail does not appear to get much use once it passes Totem Rock. It was overgrown in places and I have the chigger bites to prove it. I had to clear lots of spider webs out of my path. It was perfect........and I definitely will hike it again.
