This is a good walk. They have rerouted the first one-third of the trail through the forest now so you just have the second third on a service road. It is all worth it however when you descend into Caldwell Hollow. Beautiful deep woods! Great section.

This was a lovely 2 1/4 hour hike for my husband and me. The weather was sunny, but cool. We started out at 8:30 in the morning, leaving from the clearly signed trailhead. I'm glad I looked at a map first because further signing was iffy. Basically, when you hit a dirt/gravel road (after about 45 minutes), you turn left. In about another 20-25 minutes, there's a sign pointing you onto the trail to the left. I was surprised at how wet it was in spots, since we haven't had much rain lately. This trail has several long, slow climbs, but nothing terribly strenuous. We encountered only one other couple, and enjoyed our view of the lake from High King Hill.

Great trail. We started with a picnic by Yellowwood Lake. Then, we hiked up High King Hill, which is what I would recommend, rather than starting at the Scarce O' Fat trailhead. High King Hill may be steeper, but it's very doable, and the alternative is a more gradual but very long climb. There wasn't much of a view at the top of High King Hill; it must be too overgrown now.

It was a great hike along ridgetops and through valleys, following the creek for a while. It was very scenic.

The only problem we had was when we were on the gravel road. We didn't know which way to go -- we went the right way, but then second-guessed ourselves and went back the other way. We should have stuck with our instincts. If in doubt, make sure you look for the diamond trail markers painted on trees. We ended up spending more time than we should have needed to on the gravel road.

Great hike -- highly recommended.

THe trail is a nice blend of scenery - some in the ravine and much on the top of the ravine. We went with 2 kids in our backpacks and it was fun and challenging. Took us about 3 hours at a casual pace (letting our toddler led the way a few times) The best part of the trail is the section marked with the boot symbol it follows and criss crosses over the creekbed in the ravine. There is a small section in about the middle of the trail where it follows a dirt road unfortunately but it is only a short distance.

This website needs to post area maps, as names are not often in common usage. Anyway, the trails in this area follow a lot of logging roads and horse trails, but fortunately a large part of the hike is able to stay on footpaths. Check out one wonder - a limestone boulder in a tree (down in the creekbed)! The section which parallels the creek (which is also now part of the Tecumsuh trail) makes for good geode hunting. THe High-King Hill part has great views of the lake. Most people start at the Yellowwood dam, but it''s also worth checking out the alternate trailhead at the end of Sewell rd - It is still possible to do a loop and the trailhead is more easily accessed from Bloomington.

This is a wonderful trail. Nice views, challenging, a good day hike. The trail is used by horses so be prepared to watch where you step.
