This moderately challenging hike through the most beautiful landscape in the Midwest has something for everyone: a plethora of wildlife, varied topography, rich ecology, and dazzling views. The park itself is one of the most popular recreational destinations in the state thanks to its 3-mile beach, but this hike forges east, beyond the crowds, into a one-of-a-kind wilderness. The trail begins in a verdant oak woodland covering the backdunes before ascending the towering ridges overlooking Lake Michigan, where you may hear a phenomenon called “singing sand.” And make sure to keep an eye out for Diana of the Dunes, a local ghost whose legend dates back to the turn of the century.
