Scarce O Fat Trail/Tecumseh Trail Professional Reviews and Guides

"This trail is tough. But for hikers who don’t mind a couple of good climbs, it’s worth it. The trail passes through a deep oak and hickory forest, meets up with a ridgetop horse trail, and descends into a lush, moist hollow before rising back up to a stunning, ridgetop view that overlooks Yellowwood Lake."

"A loop trail along a ridgetop, through a deep ravine, and over a steep hill featuring a north-facing vista overlooking Yellowwood Lake."

This is a great trail for a compressed hike. It is more like 5.5 miles long, but the hill at the beginning and at the end are both quite challenging. This can be done in about 1.5 miles.

This is a nice autumn hike with most of the leaves off the trees. There is parking for 4-5 cars at the trailhead just west of the dam. The trail starts with a long but not particularly steep climb to Scarce o' Fat Ridge. Turn left and follow the logging road along the ridgetop, then take another left turn where all the signs are and descend into a lovely hollow with an intermittent stream. Finally you will climb to the top of High King Hill for a panoramic view of Yellowwood Lake. From here a series of switchbacks and a small bridge will take you back down to the parking area. Listed at 4.5 miles, it's actually more like 5.2. The middle third -- while you're on the logging road -- is mediocre as a hiking experience but the remainder is worth it. I like to take my kayak, paddle around the lake for a couple hours, then take this hike and make a day out of it.
