Mounds State Park: Trail 5 Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Mounds State Park is the perfect venue for hikers who love history as much as they love nature. Trail 5 loops through a hardwood forest along the White River, offering access to a massive and ancient Native American earthwork from around 160 BC, a homestead from the 1850s, and the remains of a train depot from the 1890s."

I just returned from Shades Park with my two daughters (8 and 6). We had a great time. There are 10 trails here with a range from easy to moderate. Trail 4 and 6 are both off the beaten path and offer a great hiking adventure. Trail 1 has some awesome views of Sugar Creek, and there is also a very cool water fall (Silver Cascade) that is worth seeing. Too many stairs to count on most the paths due to the ravines which I enjoyed.

A good alternative to the crowds at Turkey Run. Hiked up the ravine on "trail" 4. Not spectacular, but the trail was minimal and felt like bushwacking up a tight streambed. Fun. Also take trail 1 counterclockwise from Hickory Shelter. About 1/2 way around descend the long stairway to the top of Silver Cascade Falls, then upstream (not obviously marked trail) through a beautiful wooded rock canyon. If you are alone, it is truly inspiring, (for Indiana).

This is a nice trail. I grew up hiking here and it is one of the few hikes that get you in shape for more rigorous adventures outside of Indiana. The steps are a staple of the better state parks in Indiana (Pine Hill, Turkey Run, McCormick's Creek and Shades). I weaned my children on this trail as well. It is in a dense forest so you feel really isolated which is a plus. You can hike the entire park in 1.5-2 hrs depending on your pace. Be sure to visit Pine Hill Nature Preserve right up the road for some more "out of place" scenery in Indiana.
