Just southeast of beautiful Naperville stands the only “mountain” in Chicagoland, a man-made hill with a scenic overlook, one of the highest places in Illinois. From the top, you can see the sleek Chicago skyline beyond the leafy carpet of DuPage County. Long-term, the Forest Preserve of DuPage County plans to plant trees and prairie grasses on the hillsides to create a more natural landscape, and test plantings are already growing in patches. In the shadow of the hill, a quiet trail system meanders through forests and grasslands first settled by a farming family before the Civil War. The 2.7-mile Main Trail cuts through a swath of oak woodlands and savannas at the base of Greene Valley Hill, surrounded by a ring of lush wildflowers. These woods are also well known for their diverse wildlife, from herons and hawks to foxes and coyotes.
