Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie Hike

Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie Hike Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"Once the largest munitions plant in the world, Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie is now the biggest—and most tranquil—piece of protected land in northeastern Illinois. While the adjacent farmland isn’t terribly scintillating, there are plenty of other parts that make up for it: a pioneer cemetery, a lovely pond with a picnic area . . . and dozens of ammunition bunkers.

Dogs must be on leash no longer than 8 feet. Midewin is changing as the U.S. Forest Service slowly develops a more-extensive network of trails. Watch out for heavy farming equipment in the area. A herd of bison roams 1,200 acres in the central portion of Midewin."
