I knew that Forest Glen County Preserve was another underappreciated gem when a staff member told me they often get visitors from Danville— 14 miles away—who are surprised to discover this beautiful spot virtually in their own backyard. Forest Glen is a surprise. On the drive there, you’d swear there’s nothing but cornfields, until you stumble across this enclave of 1,800 acres of wooded ravines and tallgrass prairie adjacent to the Vermilion River. The wellmaintained grounds, facilities, and hiking trails, along with a variety of interpretive programs, make it easy to enjoy this diverse bit of west-central Illinois.
