"Trail of Tears State Park offers some of the best day hikes in southeast Missouri. Rich in both natural and cultural history, the park makes an excellent weekend destination and is a relatively short distance from St. Louis thanks to the direct route that I-55 offers. The park’s name hints at one of America’s darkest chapters. The Indian Removal Act of 1830 set the stage for the relocation of Native Americans living east of the Mississippi River. Many tribes were affected by the act, including members of the Cherokee, Choctaw, Chickasaw, Creek, and Seminole nations. Trail of Tears State Park honors the relocation of the Cherokee. During the winter of 1838–39, more than 16,000 Cherokee were forced to relocate from their homelands in and around western North Carolina to Indian Territory, which is in present-day Oklahoma."
