Shabbona Lake State Recreation Area Loop

Shabbona Lake State Recreation Area Loop Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"For a man-made artifact, Shabbona Lake is strikingly beautiful and varied. As you make your way around the lake, you’ll encounter grasslands, hills, streams, marshes, dense woodlands, ponds—and the lake itself is in view for nearly the entire hike.

Though this hike is technically more than 60 miles from Chicago, its natural beauty makes it worth the trip. Dogs must be leashed. For a number of years, the park has had trouble funding maintenance for the Tomahawk Trail on the east side of Shabbona Lake—if you see a sign indicating RESTRICTED ACCESS, keep in mind that the trail is open but may not be maintained."
