"Shooting south from Rock Falls, this historic towpath attracts cyclists, hikers, and anglers who come to enjoy the stocked waters, the peaceful wooded banks, and the canal’s abundant birdlife. Swallows are often seen wheeling above the surface of the water, and great blue herons stand in the shade of giant cottonwood trees. As the trail takes a series of gentle turns heading south through rural countryside, the number of visitors dwindles, allowing you to have many miles of trail all to yourself. Bring plenty of water: After the first mile, there is no drinking water along the way—no stores or restaurants, either. The path becomes very narrow when it passes under many of the bridges. Approach these underpasses slowly." Read more
