Ryerson Woods Hike

Ryerson Woods Hike Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"The trails at Edward L. Ryerson Conservation Area—known informally as Ryerson Woods—wind through some of the most stunning forestland in the Chicago region. Along the shore of the Des Plaines River and its backwater, expect to see waterfowl, wildflowers, and old rustic cabins left behind by the families that once owned the property.

No pets, bicycling, or picnicking allowed. Visit brushwoodcenter.org to learn about the nature hikes, art classes, and other events offered at Ryerson Woods."

"Nothing short of the most pristine forest in Illinois, Ryerson Woods should be at the top of any Chicagoan’s to-hike list, especially since its hidden-gem status keeps the crowds away. A lush canopy of maple, hickory, ash, and oak filters the sun into soft golden light year-round, while the placid Des Plaines River whispers nearby. Originally the rustic summer estate of reclusive steel magnate Edward Ryerson in the 1920s, today the woods are laced with a spider’s web of gentle trails." Read more
