If you like to camp in places not quite so tame, Pyramid State Park might be for you. With more than 19,000 acres, Pyramid is Illinois’ largest state park, almost all of it on land that was once strip-mined for coal. Time and man’s intervention have restored the land to a haven for wildlife, a rugged mix of heavily forested hills, meadows, wetlands, and dozens of small lakes. Hunters, fishermen, hikers, and campers can all find plenty of room to get away.
