Lake Katherine Hike

Lake Katherine Hike Professional Guide

Detailed Trail Description from our Guidebook

"As an urban nature walk, this is one of the best in the area. Nestled alongside the Calumet-Sag Channel, 136-acre Lake Katherine Nature Center features an attractive lake, an arboretum, a waterfall garden, an herb and conifer garden, and expansive views from atop a ridge in the eastern section of the preserve.

From the parking lot, head toward the buildings at the edge of the lake. The first building on the right is the E. G. Simpson Clubhouse, a remnant of a former gun club, now used for banquets. After passing the small pier and the Environmental Learning Center, which caters largely to school groups, you’ll see a small herb garden with dozens of plants growing in raised beds. Next is a bird-and-butterfly garden hosting a variety of shrubs, flowers, grasses, and vines meant to attract the winged creatures."

It is only a mile-long trail around the lake that one can easily complete within the span of 20 Minutes. But how can it be rated with a skill level of ''moderate'' when the entire this is just a flat-leveled path?....what a joke! Not recommended unless you just want to walk a dog.
